RUG Symposium “Sustainable Society”
4 juni 2012 – Groningen
Locatie: Hanze Sociëteit Groningen
Oude Boteringestraat 19
9712 GC Groningen
‘Sustainable Society’ has been chosen to be one of the three focus areas of the University of Groningen. The Executive Board of the University has set up an interfaculty taskforce to work on this core area. The institute for Integration and Social Efficacy (ISW) has been requested to organize a symposium in which the taskforce can present her ideas. In this symposium, to be held on June 4th, the university’s vision and goals concerning ‘Sustainable Society’ will be presented. Furthermore, RUG employees will be invited to actively participate in the further development and fulfillment of this focus area.
The symposium starts with a plenary session. First, our Rector Magnificus Elmer Sterken will present the vision and goals of the University of Groningen with regard to Sustainable Society. Next, Prof. Dr. Rafael Wittek (chairman of the taskforce Sustainable Society) presents the results of the taskforce. Last, Prof. Drs. Jacques Wallage (director ad interim ISW) will illustrate the ISW-model as a means to give shape to the organization and implementation of ‘Sustainable Society’.
In the afternoon, three workgroups will each elaborate on a different theme of Sustainable Society: Transitions, Governance and Media. Central to the theme Transitions is the study of historical context and the socio-economic conditions on transitions to sustainable societies, the related socio-economic and ecological processes, and their positive and negative consequences. Within the theme Governance, the association between governance and social sustainability plays an important role. The legitimacy of national and supranational political institutions and management structures with regard to socio-economic and physical factors is important within this theme. Finally, the focus of the theme Media is on the interaction between (new) communication and information structures and the sustainability of societies.
The purpose of the workgroups is to identify relevant public challenges and related research questions within each theme. The symposium will be concluded by the presentation of the results of the three workgroups in a plenary session.
